The Loire Valley, a lush little secret, is quite often also referred to as the Garden of France. The land itself is rife with vineyards, lavish flowers and landscape, and castles — or, more correctly, chateaux — dot the charming green hills. For hundreds and years, writers and poets and artists have viewed it as something of a mecca, venturing to the valley for the inspiration provided by the gentle, calming atmosphere surrounding the place.
You can thus see why it is an amazing holiday destination as well, for people all over the world. When you consider its rich history and its stunning sites, you will likely be unable to resist taking a trip there yourself.
For instance, you can visit Chartres, which is home to a world renowned church, the Cathedral of Chartres. Rodin himself considered the cathedral the “Acropolis of France.” To be sure, it is a beautiful representation of authentic medieval architecture.
The city of Orleans can also be found in the Loire Valley. Joan of Arc liberated the city from England in 1429. There is a special celebration to commemorate her every May.
For those with a medieval and Renaissance bent, Bourges is a must see destination itself. The streets are still paved in stone, the architecture is to die for, and there are still many remaining ancient structures.
